Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Cochin to Thekkady – Into the Forest

Your private driver picks you up in the morning from your hotel, Cochin International Airport, or Ernakulam Railway Station. The drive to Thekkady covers approximately 155 kilometres through the hills of Idukki district and takes around four to five hours.

The road itself is one of Kerala's most scenic drives. You climb steadily through rubber and tea plantations, past small roadside markets selling fresh cardamom, pepper, and vanilla. The air changes as you gain altitude — cooler, spice-scented, and noticeably quieter than Cochin's busy coastal city. By the time you enter Thekkady, the forest closes in on both sides of the road and the entire atmosphere shifts into something wilder and calmer at the same time.

On arrival, check into your hotel and freshen up. The afternoon is your first encounter with the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Head to the Periyar Lake jetty for a boat ride on Periyar Lake, the centrepiece of one of India's finest wildlife reserves. The Forest Department operates these rides on large, comfortable covered boats that move slowly along the lake shore and through the flooded forest margins.

Periyar Lake was created when the Mullaperiyar Dam was built in 1895, and the submerged forest that borders the lake today is one of the most atmospheric wildlife viewing settings in all of India. Dead tree trunks rise from the water like ancient sentinels, and herds of elephants regularly come to the lake shore to drink and bathe. On a good morning, you might spot gaur (Indian bison), sambar, wild boar, and rare lion-tailed macaques watching from the forest edge. The birdlife is outstanding — crested serpent eagles, Indian darters, kingfishers, and herons work the water's edge constantly.

Return to the hotel for dinner. If time and energy permit, the Thekkady town market is worth a walk in the evening — local spice shops sell cardamom, black pepper, star anise, and cinnamon at far better prices than you will find anywhere else in India. Overnight Thekkady.

Day 2: Thekkady to Alleppey – Backwaters and a Houseboat Night

After breakfast, check out from your Thekkady hotel and explore any remaining optional activities before departure. Thekkady offers a range of additional experiences that can be arranged with advance notice — a guided spice plantation walk through coffee, pepper, and cardamom estates, a nature trekking program with certified forest guides inside the Periyar buffer zone, or bamboo rafting on the forest waterways. Each of these activities adds a completely different texture to the Thekkady experience and is particularly recommended for wildlife enthusiasts who want more time in the forest.

By mid-morning, your driver heads west toward Alleppey (Alappuzha), approximately 140 kilometres through Kottayam district. The landscape changes dramatically as you descend from the hills — rubber estates give way to paddy fields, then coconut groves, then glimpses of water on either side of the road as you approach the backwater belt.

Arrive at the Alleppey boat jetty and board your traditional Kerala houseboat (kettuvallam) for an overnight journey through the backwaters. Kerala's backwaters are a network of over 900 kilometres of waterways — lakes, rivers, canals, and lagoons — that run parallel to the coast, separated from the Arabian Sea by a narrow strip of land. Alleppey sits at the heart of this network and is the most popular base for houseboat exploration.

Your houseboat is a converted traditional rice barge, now fitted with bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining area, and a shaded front deck where you spend most of your time watching Kerala go by. The boat moves slowly through narrow village canals and wide open lakes like Vembanad — the largest lake in Kerala — and every hour brings a different scene. Fishermen cast nets in the late afternoon light. Children wave from the banks. Egrets and cormorants fish the shallows alongside your boat. Women in colourful sarees walk along the canal paths between paddy fields. Kerala's backwater life is calm, ancient, and completely absorbing.

Your houseboat crew prepares all meals on board using fresh local ingredients — Kerala fish curry, appam, coconut-based vegetable dishes, and fresh rice from the fields around you. Dinner on the houseboat deck as the sun sets over the backwaters is one of those travel experiences that stays with you for years. Overnight on the houseboat.

Day 3: Alleppey to Cochin – Departure

Wake to the sounds of birds and water on your final morning. Breakfast is served on the houseboat deck as the boat makes its way back to the Alleppey jetty. Disembark after breakfast and your private driver picks you up for the return journey to Cochin.

The drive from Alleppey to Cochin covers approximately 85 kilometres and takes around two hours. You arrive in Cochin with time for a brief stop at Fort Kochi — the old colonial quarter with its famous Chinese fishing nets, Dutch warehouses, and heritage cafes — before your driver drops you at Cochin International Airport or Ernakulam Railway Station for your onward journey. Tour ends.
