Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Jabalpur to Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve

Your private driver picks you up from your hotel or from Jabalpur Airport or Jabalpur Railway Station in the morning. The drive from Jabalpur to Tadoba covers approximately 300 kilometres and takes around five to six hours via the NH 44 corridor through the heart of Madhya Pradesh and into Vidarbha, Maharashtra. The landscape shifts gradually from the rocky terrain around Jabalpur to the flat agricultural plains and then the thick dry deciduous forest belt that announces tiger country.

Plan a lunch stop en route at a clean roadside dhaba or a recommended restaurant in Nagpur if your schedule allows. Arriving at your jungle lodge by early afternoon gives you time to check in, freshen up, and attend your naturalist's pre-safari briefing before heading into the park for your first jeep safari.

The afternoon safari runs from approximately 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM (timings vary by season). This first drive is as much about orientation as it is about sightings — you learn the zones, identify the key water bodies, and begin reading the forest for signs of wildlife. Tadoba's late afternoon light is extraordinary for photography. The dry teak canopy opens up above the jeep track and the golden hour light cuts through the forest in long shafts. Return to the lodge for dinner and an evening campfire. Overnight Tadoba.

Day 2: Tadoba – Full Safari Day

This is the heart of the tour. Wake before sunrise for your morning jeep safari, which begins at the park gate at first light — typically around 5:30 AM to 6:00 AM depending on the season. The morning hours are the most productive for tiger sightings. Tigers are most active near water sources in the early hours, and Tadoba's lakes — particularly Tadoba Lake, Telia Lake, and the grassland meadows near the Moharli range — are well-known sighting spots.

Your naturalist listens for alarm calls from spotted deer, langur monkeys, and sambar — the forest's own early warning system that tells you a predator is nearby. When the forest goes quiet and the deer freeze, you know something large is moving in the undergrowth. Tadoba's tigers are relatively habituated to vehicle presence, which means sightings here are often prolonged and close compared to other reserves.

Return to the lodge by 9:30 AM for a full breakfast. Rest through the midday heat, review your photographs, and enjoy the lodge's naturalist library or wildlife talks. In the afternoon, head back into a different zone of the reserve. Tadoba's buffer zones and core areas together cover over 1,700 square kilometres, and each zone has a distinct character. The Navegaon buffer zone, for example, is excellent for wild dog packs and leopards, while the Kolsa range in the south holds some of Tadoba's most undisturbed forest.

The evening safari ends at sunset. Dinner at the lodge features traditional Vidarbha cuisine alongside continental options. Your naturalist reviews the day's sightings and discusses the strategy for the morning drive. Overnight Tadoba.

Day 3: Tadoba Morning Safari | Return to Jabalpur

One final morning safari before checkout. This drive often produces the best results of the tour — by now your naturalist knows the current tiger movement patterns in the zone, and you know the landscape well enough to read it yourself. The morning light in Tadoba's teak forest is some of the finest anywhere in Central India's wildlife belt.

Return to the lodge by 10:00 AM. Check out after a leisurely breakfast. Your private driver departs for Jabalpur by mid-morning, with the return journey covering the same NH 44 route through Chandrapur, Wardha, and Nagpur. Stop for lunch en route. Arrive back in Jabalpur by late afternoon or early evening. Tour ends

Best Time to Visit Tadoba

March to June is the peak season for tiger sightings at Tadoba. As the summer heat builds, water sources shrink and animals — including tigers — concentrate around the remaining lakes and streams, making sightings more frequent and often more extended. May and June deliver the highest sighting rates but also the most intense heat, with temperatures in Vidarbha regularly reaching 42 to 46 degrees Celsius. Early morning and late afternoon drives remain comfortable even in peak summer.

October to February offers pleasant weather and lush post-monsoon vegetation. The forest is greener, birds are more active, and the landscape looks its finest for photography. Tiger sightings are slightly less frequent as animals spread across a wider area, but the overall experience is rich and the lodge stays are extremely comfortable.

July to September (Monsoon) – Tadoba typically closes its core zone from July 1 through September 30 for the monsoon season. Some buffer zones may remain accessible. Plan your visit outside this window for the best experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Tadoba from Jabalpur?
Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve's main Moharli gate is approximately 290 to 310 kilometres from Jabalpur city, depending on the route. The drive takes five to six hours by private car via NH 44 and passes through Nagpur. A short halt in Nagpur for fuel and refreshments is recommended.

Is Tadoba better than Kanha or Bandhavgarh for tiger sightings?
Tadoba consistently records some of India's highest tiger sighting success rates, comparable to Bandhavgarh and Ranthambore. The tigers here are well-habituated to safari vehicles, which means sightings tend to be prolonged and close. Each reserve has its own character — Tadoba's open teak forest and large water bodies make tiger sightings particularly dramatic.

How many tigers live in Tadoba?
As of the most recent tiger census data, Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve holds approximately 115 to 120 tigers across its core and buffer zones, making it one of the most tiger-dense reserves in India.

What other wildlife can I expect to see in Tadoba?
Beyond tigers, Tadoba offers strong sightings of leopards, Indian wild dogs (dholes), sloth bears, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, marsh crocodiles, and Indian pythons. The bird list is outstanding for raptors, waterbirds, and forest species.

Can I do Tadoba as a day trip from Nagpur?
Nagpur is only about 140 kilometres from Tadoba and many visitors do a day safari from Nagpur. However, staying inside or immediately adjacent to the reserve gives you access to both morning and evening safaris, which significantly increases your sighting opportunities. The overnight jungle lodge experience is also one of the most memorable parts of any Tadoba visit.

Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes, for children above the age of six. National park rules in India require children to be seated safely in the jeep during the safari. Many families find the early morning start and wildlife spotting an exciting and educational experience for older children.
