Day 1: Arrive Cochin – Drive to Munnar

Your Kerala journey begins the moment you land at Cochin International Airport. Our representative meets you at the arrival terminal and introduces you to your private driver, who will be your companion throughout the four days. After a brief orientation, you set off on the drive to Munnar.

The road from Cochin to Munnar covers approximately 140 kilometres and takes around four hours. It is one of the most rewarding drives in South India. You leave the coastal flatlands of Ernakulam behind and begin climbing through cardamom-scented hills, rubber plantations, and dense tropical forest. The air grows cooler with every hairpin bend, and by the time you reach the higher elevations of Idukki district, the landscape has transformed completely into rolling green tea estates.

Munnar sits at the confluence of three mountain streams — Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala — at an altitude of 1,600 metres above sea level. The British once used it as their summer retreat from the heat of the plains, and it is easy to see why. Check into your hotel, settle in, and spend the evening at leisure. A walk along the Munnar bazaar, a cup of fresh-brewed estate tea on your hotel balcony, or simply watching the mist roll in over the tea gardens is a perfect introduction to the hills. Day 2: Munnar – Tea Gardens, Lakes, and the Nilgiri Tahr

A full day of exploration in and around Munnar. After breakfast at your hotel, your driver takes you through Munnar's most scenic spots at a relaxed pace.

The first stop is Mattupetty Dam, a shimmering reservoir set against a backdrop of tea-covered hills. The dam was originally built to supply water to the High Range region and today it is one of Munnar's most popular viewpoints. Boats ply the calm waters and the surrounding grasslands often host gaur and spotted deer in the early morning.

From Mattupetty, you drive to Kundala Lake, a serene artificial lake surrounded by tea estates. Pedal boats are available if you want to get out on the water. The lake has a quiet, unhurried atmosphere that makes it one of Munnar's most relaxing stops.

Next is Echo Point, where the lake narrows between two steep hillsides and any sound you make bounces back in a satisfying reply. The spot is popular with families and is particularly beautiful in the morning before crowds arrive.

The afternoon takes you to Rajamalai, also known as Eravikulam National Park, where the rare and endangered Nilgiri Tahr — a mountain ungulate found only in the Western Ghats — can be spotted grazing on the open grasslands. The park sits at high altitude and the views across the Anamudi massif (the highest peak in South India at 2,695 metres) are extraordinary on a clear day. Day 3: Drive to Thekkady – Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

After an early breakfast, check out from your Munnar hotel and begin the scenic drive toward Thekkady, approximately 110 kilometres through the Cardamom Hills (around three hours by road). The drive itself is a highlight — winding roads through cardamom and pepper plantations, small village markets selling fresh spices, and glimpses of forested valleys dropping away below the road.

Thekkady is the gateway to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, one of India's most important and well-managed protected areas. The sanctuary covers 777 square kilometres of forest, of which 360 square kilometres is dense evergreen and semi-evergreen forest. Declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978, Periyar is home to tigers, Indian elephants, leopards, wild dogs, sambar, gaur, and an outstanding variety of birdlife.

On arrival, check into your hotel and head out for the afternoon sightseeing. The signature experience at Thekkady is the boat ride on Periyar Lake, a large artificial reservoir that sits at the heart of the sanctuary. The lake was created when the Mullaperiyar Dam was built in 1895, and the flooded forest edges along the shoreline now serve as gathering points for wildlife. Elephants often come to drink and bathe at the lake shore in the mornings, and sightings from the boat are common.

Optional activities available at Thekkady at an additional cost include a spice plantation guided tour, bamboo rafting on forest waterways, trekking with a trained forest guide, and elephant interaction programs run by the forest department. Day 4: Thekkady to Cochin Airport – Departure

After a final breakfast at your Thekkady hotel, check out and begin the return journey to Cochin International Airport. The drive covers approximately 200 kilometres and takes around five to six hours, so an early start is recommended depending on your flight time.

The road back passes through Kottayam district, with views across the backwater landscape of central Kerala — rubber estates, coconut groves, and river channels that hint at the backwater world a little further west.
