Rajaji National Park Tour from Delhi

3 days from Delhi to Rajaji National Park. Elephant safaris, jeep drives through Shivalik forests, wildlife encounters, and optional Haridwar temples.

Rajaji National Park Tour from Delhi

Just 260 kilometres from Delhi, the Shivalik hills rise steeply from the Gangetic plain and the forest begins. Within that forest — stretching across three districts of Uttarakhand and more than 820 square kilometres of sal, teak, and riverine jungle — lives one of North India’s most spectacular collections of wildlife. Rajaji National Park is not as famous as Corbett or Ranthambore, and that is precisely what makes it so rewarding.

This 3-day Rajaji National Park Tour from Delhi is designed for travelers who want a genuine wildlife experience without the crowds, the long distances, or the complicated logistics of a multi-week itinerary. You leave Delhi in the morning, arrive at the park by afternoon, and spend the next two days exploring the forest by jeep and on elephant safari. On the final morning, you return to Delhi — refreshed, unhurried, and having seen a side of North India that most visitors completely miss.

Rajaji is home to one of the highest elephant populations of any national park in Uttarakhand, alongside tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wild boar, sambar, barking deer, nilgai, goral, and over 400 species of birds. The park spreads across Haridwar, Dehradun, and Pauri Garhwal districts, and its proximity to the Ganga makes it particularly rich in waterbirds and riverine species. This is wild, accessible, and deeply underappreciated India — and this tour puts you right at the heart of it.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Delhi to Rajaji National Park – Into the Shivalik Hills

Your private driver picks you up from your home, hotel, or Delhi Airport or Railway Station in the early morning. The drive from Delhi to the Rajaji National Park area covers approximately 261 kilometres and takes around five hours via the Delhi-Dehradun Highway (NH 72A). The road passes through Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee, and Haridwar before entering the forest belt at the base of the Shivaliks.

The drive itself marks a gradual transition — from Delhi's urban sprawl to sugarcane fields, then open highway, then the first glimpses of forested hills rising to the north. As you approach Haridwar, the Ganga comes into view and the air carries the particular freshness that you only notice when you are truly away from the city.

Upon arrival at the park gate area, your driver transfers you to your pre-booked jungle lodge or wildlife resort. These properties sit immediately adjacent to or just outside the park boundary, which means you hear the forest at night and the morning air carries birdcalls before you even step outside. Check in, freshen up, and have a relaxed lunch. The rest of the afternoon is yours to settle in, walk the resort grounds, or visit the naturalist for a briefing on tomorrow's safari.

Dinner at the lodge features hearty North Indian cuisine. After dinner, spend some time in the open under the Uttarakhand sky — free from Delhi's light pollution, the stars here are a reminder of just how far you have come in a single day. Overnight Rajaji.

Day 2: Rajaji National Park – Full Safari Day

This is the day the tour was designed for. Wake before sunrise and head to the park gate for your morning jeep safari. Rajaji's forest is a mix of dry deciduous sal, riverine jungle along the Song and Motichur rivers, and open grassland patches that attract large numbers of herbivores. The morning light cuts through the sal canopy in long golden shafts and the forest is at its most active in the two hours after dawn.

Your naturalist guide reads the forest — watching for alarm calls from spotted deer and langur monkeys, tracking pugmarks on the dusty trail, and identifying the distant crash of a large animal moving through undergrowth. Rajaji holds a significant tiger population and leopards are seen with reasonable frequency, particularly near the rocky outcrops and ravines of the Shivalik slopes. Wild dogs (dholes) move in packs through the riverine sections, and sloth bears are encountered near fruiting trees and rocky escarpments.

The real star of Rajaji, however, is its elephants. The park has the highest concentration of Asian elephants in any Uttarakhand protected area — estimates suggest over 600 elephants across the reserve. Herds move through the forest in the early morning hours, often crossing open ground between water sources. Seeing a herd of 20 to 30 wild elephants move through the sal forest at dawn is an experience that genuinely stops your breath.

Return to the lodge by mid-morning for a full breakfast. Rest through the middle of the day, review your photographs, and enjoy the lodge gardens or the naturalist's wildlife library. In the afternoon, head back out for a second safari through a different section of the park. The afternoon light is excellent for photography and elephant activity near the river increases as the day cools toward sunset.

The evening ends around the campfire at the lodge with dinner and a wildlife review session. Overnight Rajaji.

Day 3: Morning Jungle Safari | Drive Back to Delhi

One last morning safari before checkout. This early drive captures the freshest part of the day — cool air, low light, and a forest that has not yet been disturbed by the day's heat. By now your naturalist knows the current animal movement patterns well, and this often produces the best sightings of the entire tour.

Return to the lodge by 9:00 AM. Check out after breakfast. Before heading back toward Delhi, you have the option of a short stop in Haridwar — just 20 to 25 kilometres from the park. Haridwar is one of India's most important pilgrimage cities, sitting at the point where the Ganga descends from the Himalayan foothills onto the plains. A walk along Har Ki Pauri ghat, where the Ganga Aarti is performed every evening and the river runs clear and cold from the mountains above, is a deeply atmospheric complement to a morning spent in the forest. Even a 45-minute stop here adds a completely different dimension to the journey home.

Your driver then heads south toward Delhi, arriving back in the city by late afternoon or early evening depending on traffic. Tour ends.
